Indeterminate Nature of Crypto-Governance: Does Law Matter?

Intertwined phenomena such as human-induced climate change, global rise of authoritarian systems alongside the demise of democratic structures, and crypto-technological developments are inducing significant and differential shifts in the conditions of human and non-human existence, providing a fertile ground for experiments in organizing, governing, and imagining societies differently. Consequently, modes of private tech-governance (such as start-up societies, seasteading micronations, smart cities, and space colonies) are on the rise. This talk traces the ontological and epistemological assumptions of such projects and asks how – and if – law can matter differently.

Public Transport for All? Migrant’s Views on One of Europe’s Top Public Transport Cities.

Several studies have identified public transport in Vienna, Austria as exemplary in Europe based on its geographic coverage, cost, and ridership levels. However, these studies do not differentiate the quality of public transport for minority groups such as immigrants. In 2020 immigrants, who were born abroad or who have at least one parent who was born abroad, accounted for 41 % of Vienna’s population.

In vivo veritas – using CRISPR to find novel cancer genes and drug targets

Finding the genes that are on the one hand responsible for tumor development and on the other hand those genes essential for a tumor cell to survive is one of the oldest goals of cancer research. Genes that are essential and fall into classes, which allow drug development to suppress their function, lie at the heart of finding novel therapies to combat cancer.

Covid-19 testing: Quo vadis Austria?

The incidence of viral distribution and infection has soared over the past decades due to population growth, deforestation and increased travel, resulting in a global pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 viral outbreak. As a consequence, rapid detection and identification of viral infections is a pressing human health issue.

Optical Imaging of Tissue Perfusion at the Clinical Bedside

Bedside monitoring of tissue perfusion is important for a variety of diseases. For cerebral monitoring, cerebral perfusion is important especially for traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, sepsis, and stroke, where inadequate perfusion can lead to ischemia and neuronal damage. Diffuse optical methods, such as near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy, are non-invasive optical techniques which can be used to measure cerebral changes at the bedside. This talk will focus on these optical techniques as applied to clinical measurements to monitor patients and predict treatment outcome.

Living on the Edge? – Neanderthals and Denisovans in Central Asia

Central Asia and Siberia have for a long time only played a very limited role in discussions of modern human origins. These areas were seen as peripheral to our story, that was thought to mostly have taken place in Africa, Europe and Eastern Asia.
